Low Resistance LGA Connector Pad

In an effort to improve assembly efficiency and reduce the amount of lead content in finished products, many electronics manufacturers have selected a land grid array (LGA) as part of their integrated circuit package.

Fujipoly’s W-Series Matrix Connector is the ideal interconnect pad for LGAs with 200 or more circuit board I/Os.  After inserting the W-Series pad between the circuit board and components all that is necessary to make reliable electrical contact is even pressure.  This eliminates the need to solder or rework components on the board.

The highly reliable W-Series connector is embedded with 300 to 2,000 gold-plated wires per cm2 and provides a current carrying capacity of 500 mA/mm2. The low resistance silicone-based connector is available from stock in sizes up to 50mm x 50mm and thicknesses of .50mm or 1.0mm. PRODUCT NEWS

Nextreme Releases New OptoCooler High Voltage Series

Nextreme Thermal Solutions, a company focused on microscale thermal and power management products for the electronics industry, has released the OptoCooler HV series, a new class of RoHS-compliant high voltage and high heat pumping thermoelectric coolers that are well suited for standard circuitry and power requirements. The first module in the series, the OptoCooler HV14, is the latest product in Nextreme's OptoCooler family of thermoelectric coolers designed specifically for the optoelectronics and telecommunications industry.

The OptoCooler HV14 operates at a maximum voltage of 2.9 V and can pump 1.7 watts of heat at 85°C in a footprint of only 2.8 mm2. The module can create a temperature differential (DeltaT) of up to 51°C between its hot and cold sides, making it well suited for the cooling and temperature control of optoelectronic devices such as laser diodes and high brightness LEDs.

At the core of the OptoCooler module is Nextreme's Thermal Copper Pillar Bump, an electronic device made from thin-film thermoelectric material embedded in flip chip interconnects (in particular, copper pillar solder bumps) used in electronic and optoelectronic packaging. Thermal bumps act as solid-state heat pumps and add thermal management functionality locally on the surface of a chip or other electrical component. Based on market demand and recent technology advances, Nextreme has reduced the size of the thermal bump by 75 percent, thereby increasing voltages by 300 percent and reducing current draw by the same proportion. The net result eliminates the need for special voltage conditioning and reduces the overall electrical current required to operate the device.

The new platform uses an array-based assembly (ABA) process that represents a vast improvement in throughput capability and manufacturing tolerances. The ABA process decreases the size of Nextreme's thermal bumps to approximately 125 microns, which makes them flip-chip bumping compatible with standard solder bumping processes commonly used in electronics packaging. Consequently, as product volumes scale, manufacturers of LEDs and other semiconductor chips can integrate cooling and temperature control functionality directly in the package during assembly, resulting in a high-volume, low cost thermal management solution.

The OptoCooler HV14 is RoHS compliant and is available for order now.

Omega Engineering, Inc. Releases Tamperproof Thermostat FTO11 and FTD011 Series

Omega's new series of tamperproof thermostats come with a fixed setpoint and are compact in design. These CE compliant products are DIN rail mountable and the modules are color coded:  red for normally closed models (thermostat opens at temperature rise) and blue for normally open models (thermostat closes at temperature rise). Several different fixed temperature setpoints are available. The dual models come with two thermostats in one unit: one normally closed (NC) and one normally open (NO) or two normally open (NO).

New Optran Polyimide UV/WF Fiber for High Temperature Environments

CeramOptec's Optran Polyimide UV/WF polyimide coated silica/silica fibers are well suited for applications in high temperature environments. At temperatures of 100°C to 250°C, when acrylate, nylon and Tefzel coatings begin to deteriorate, CeramOptec's unique polyimide coated fibers are completely unaffected and can withstand long-term temperatures up to 400°C.  These fibers are also available in Optran Plus and Optran Ultra with NAs up to 0.37, which is exceptionally high for a silica/silica fiber.
For extreme high temperature applications, such as in jet engines, the PowerLightGuide fused end bundle can withstand temperatures up to 675°C. Without the need for epoxy, these fused end bundles can increase transmission by up to 50 percent.

These CeramOptec fibers support a wide range of spectral transmission from 190 nm to 2,500 nm. They offer high resistance to laser damage, a high core-to-clad ratio, can be sterilized and use biocompatible materials.
CeramOptec's Optran Polyimide UV/WF Fibers are well suited for a broad range of demanding applications. In the industrial/scientific arena, the fibers are suited for use in spectroscopy, sensors, UV photolithography, laser welding, soldering, nuclear plasma diagnostics, analytical instruments, laser diode pigtailing, pyrometry and semiconductor capital equipment. They can also be used in medical applications including medical diagnostics, laser delivery and photodynamic therapy.

Honeywell Low Voltage Wire for Climate System Control

Honeywell has released a full line of UL listed PVC and plenum low voltage wires designed for improved performance of thermostat controls, doorbells and heating and air conditioning equipment. The wire is recommended for use with digital and non-digital thermostats to ensure the best possible climate control system performance.

Available in 250-foot or 500-foot spools, Honeywell Speedbags, and pull boxes, the wire features polypropylene insulation for exceptional dielectric protection. It strips easily and cleanly for faster installations with reduced jobsite waste, plus has sequential footage markings to let the installer know how much cable is left in a box or on a spool.

Wire construction consists of between two to 12 color-coded, solid copper conductors (AWG 18 to 20) in a flexible, lightweight jacket that is sunlight resistant. PVC general-purpose wires are offered in white or brown jackets, with the plenum cables are available in a natural jacket color.

Jaro Thermal Releases Synergistic Super-Flow Turbo

JaroTherm's new combination of counter-rotating coolers gush 81 CFM (13,000 outlet rpm) of super-cooled air. The newest model Turbo (AS06012) incorporates a fixed-blade design that maximizes static pressure to 2.44 inches in H2O.

Measuring in at 60 mm by 60 mm by 76 mm, the new dual-fan combo is well suited for power and appliance applications that require ultra-high output. To exceed today's toughest environmental requirements, the extended temperature is -25°C to 90°C.

Standard options include IP-55 water protection, on-board PWM control, alarm output, tachometer output, thermistor controls and more. The life expectancy is 70,000 hours at 40°C / 65 percent.

Fluke Application Note Provides a Guide to Under-Utilized Functions

Fluke Corp., the global leader in portable electronic test and measurement technology, has published a valuable series of application notes to help electricians and electronics professionals do advanced testing with their Fluke digital multimeters (DMMs).

Advanced DMMs such as the Fluke 289 Industrial Trending Digital Multimeter and Fluke 287 Electronics Multimeter incorporate a multitude of test and measurement functions. But, some users may be unsure of when or how to perform certain tests. Fluke Application Notes, available through the Fluke Web site, are written and illustrated to take the mystery out of such test procedures and help Fluke users solve problems and get the most from their Fluke test tools.

One under-utilized DMM function is Fast Min/Max or Peak Min/Max recording, available on the Fluke 287-289 and 187-189 DMMs.  When set up to monitor a signal or system, these Fluke DMMs can capture intermittent or transient events as short as 250 μs and record the time and duration of the event.

With this measurement, users can gain critical insight into the stability of the signal or the system they are evaluating and know exactly when unusual events have taken place. This can be a real asset and time saver as a troubleshooting tool for detecting intermittent or transient events without having to be present.
